Summer time fishing on Lake Saimaa - July 2014 - 2021

Third visit to Fishing Cottage Jokiniemi for our Romanian fisherman - July 2021

Our Romanian visitors caught good size pikes by spinning in the end of July 2022.

In 25 July–1 August 2021 Gheorghe, his sons and their friends stayed at our cottage for the third time, having previously visited us in 2018 and 2019. This time the weather was much hotter than the previous years, which had a positive effect on the bite of the fish.

Biggest perch weighted amost 1 kg.

They did most of their spinning in relatively shallow waters of max 4–5 meters deep by using soft baits and spoons. They told me that the best color for catching changed daily, but day after day the best lure was a thin Abu Garcia Toby. Natural colors such as perch and cisco worked the best in soft bait spinning.

This zander + 50 cm was released after fast photo shoot.

Their biggest perch weighed almost 1 kg, biggest pikes were 70–80 cm and biggest zanders 50–60 cm long. Most of the time the weather was sunny and hot, but there were also a couple of rainy days. Rainy weather is quite often good for catching both pikes and zanders. They did also some trolling and caught all our most common predator species such as pike, perch and zander. The end of July is a great period for catching all kinds of fish near our fishing cottage.

Fishing on Lake Saimaa - July 2019

First week of July was very warm and sunny due wind from south to east. Many of our early spring visitors had been complaining how difficult it was to catch zander. Most common mistake was to try catch them  from shallow. Water temperature was varying all spring by effect of air temperature. When we had longer period of hot weather, zanders did come to shallow water of 4 - 6 meter deep, when weather turned colder we had to do catching in water depth area from 7 - 12 meter deep. Midsummer do start actual zander fishing season near our cottage.

First fishing day was great for our Estonian visitors.

In the beginning of second week of July 2019 we welcomed a fisherman group of 4 persons from Estonia in to our fishing cottage. Wind was changing to north, but it did not have influence for catching during first days of their visit.

Perch + 500 gr.
They caught good daily numbers of pikes as well as big perches and breams in shallow water. Couple last days of their visit were colder due north wind which made fishes got passive and move to deep water areas. They tried to do catching for zander as well, but unfortunately they choosed little bit too shallow depth area for catching. Zanders had moved in to water areas of  9 - 10 meter deep.

Hooking & cooking is very important part of daily routinues of our fishing visitors.

Raigo, who is excellent photographer visited Kolovesi National Park trekking trail and shooted some great pictures there. They enjoyed of fishing, sauna and tasty home made fish foods during their stay in our cottage.

Before arrival of our next fisherman group I did some fishing to located zanders, pikes and perches with my mother, who is keen fishing woman. It was great to relax and to do 3 - 4 hours fishing with her. Our next group made much more better with zander fishing when I was able to share some fresh fishing information.

My mother and zander 47 cm caught by trolling 13 June 2019.

Quite often our visitors want me to organize a tutorial fishing trip for the beginning of their holiday to quicken the process for getting  better fishing results by learning spots, biting times and best colors for area near our cottage.

Many groups want to do all the fishing independently from the beginning to the end of their holiday. They have told me it takes 3 - 4 days to learn spots, colors etc before they start feeling comfortable with fishing in Finland. Quite often their second visit to our cottage is much more succesful by fishing results due experience they have gathered during their previous visit.

Cooking and sharing a tasty meal of fish caught by themselves is a important part of fishing holiday for most of our visitors.

When our our next fisherman group of 6 persons from Latvia arrived I gave them advices for fishing area, best depth area and colors, so they did pretty well with zander fishing. They caught good size  zanders and pikes daily and their biggest zander caught was appr. 60 cm long and weighted 1.8 kg.

Pike + 60 cm

Beginning of their holiday was very hot, they used to have a siesta & sun bathing in the middle of day. They did most of fishing in time of early morning and late evening. Luckily some members of their group did catching in shallow water during daytime as well, and they were able to catch good size perches and ides as well.

Ide caught by soft bait spinning in July 2019.
Unfortunately no one rented our cottage for 4th week of July, because weather was perfectly hot and beautiful for vacation and for fishing. Couple last days of this week were the hottest of all summer, but dramatical change for unpredictable weather of summer 2019 was right behind the corner.

Our first ever Japanese fishin family arrived our cottage 27 July 2019. Day was extremely hot, closer to 30 degrees of celsius. Because their arrival was late, we had decited to organize a combined fishing & boating trip one day after their arrival.

We started our event by travelling 20 km sightseeing by boat for our camp site. Hole family helped me with cooking and did some fishing from shoreline. We started our actual boat fishing part near by 18.00 by softbait spinning and trolling. Trolling was completely new fishing method for our Japanese visitors and they were very interrested learning it. We caught both pikes, perches and zanders by softbait spinning and pikes when trolling with wobblers. We ended our fishing day for sunset and  I returned our Japanese visitors back to our cottage for hot sauna and evening snacks.

Beautiful pike caught by softbait spinning.

Next day after our fishing event we learned how to use outboard engines and electronics of our cottage boats and did some fish handling together. After that it was time to say good bye and allow our visitors to start their independent fishing week.

Weather turned very cold for the season of summer in time of couple of days. I was totally horrified when seeing dily temps go down to 10 - 14 degrees of celsius. Desbite of cold north wind, worst enemy of fishermen in our area, our brave Japanese visitors did great with fishing. Father of the  family did fishing alone early morning and with his daughters and wife after midday and evening time. They caught good size zanders up to 60 cm and pikes up to + 90 cm long. Daily numbers of fishes caught were very good. Many thanks for your visit, it was great to get such a lovely family visiting us.

July 2016 guidances

I had a guided fishing trip with a German fisherman group on the second weekend of July..... The weather was perfect for catching zanders....so, that's what we did.

Zander 50 cm

To be honest, beginning of our fishing day was quite challenging. It was easy to locate our target fishes, but much more difficult to reach crazy bite. Weather was calm and hot, fishes seemed to have siesta and we were catching individuals. In zander fishing finding correct color for catching is very important. When color puzzle is solved, we can do great for a while, until they find some other color more attractive and we must start again. In the other hand there are great fishing periods during July and August, in which we can do great fishing day after day for time of couple of weeks as we reached in the year 2014.

Beautiful perch + 700 gr

Challenging days make me humble, but do not worry. Finally we did great. I was expecting to reach very good evening fishing and I did. All of our visitors did catch zanders, pikes and perches, time to time I needed both of my landing nets to be able to take measurements and release fishes we did not want to take or which were too short. We started our evening fishing by softbait spinning and finalized it by trolling in time of very beautiful sunset near 22.00. Actually our visitors would have wanted to continue even longer, but our 8 hour day was full.

It is very important to release fishes that do not exceed minimum landing lenght. We do lift the fish in to vessel poured with water, unhook and take measurements & memory pics and release the fish. It is highly recommended to be able to de all this in time of 2 - 3 minutes maximun.

In the end of July 2016 I had a guided fishing trip with old customer of mine. We had 6 hour guidance starting from early evenig and ending for sunset. I had been training & finding fish right before this event, which made it much more easier for me to make results. We did both trolling and softbait spinning, but mainly spinning. During this 6 hour session we had 3 tops on bite, which is quite normal in perch and zander fishing this part of the year.

Beautiful zander and perch caught in the end of July 2016.

I do not favour pictures in which there are piles of fish to show how many fishes we have caught. I do select one or two fishes that were biggest or gave us great fight for picture taken. Biggest fish is not allwasy published, if there is a better pictures of smaller species available. By my opinion a picture of fish caught must respect the catch and indicate joy and success of fishing.

If we are hanging the fish vertically, it has been killed for cooking, other wise we do hold fish horizontally. Unfortunately there is still a lot to learn in taking beautiful pictures, but I do hope I am improving year by year.

July 2015 fishing stories

Early evening on Lake Saimaa, July 2015

The beginning of July 2015 gave us rain but also a couple of hot summer days. It was also time for big pikes: on our nearby waters one fisherman caught a pike over the magic weight of 10 kilos, and our cottage customers were able to pull in pikes up to 7 or 8 kilos. We had a group of Belarusian visitors staying at our cottage, and they told that in their country the waters were more shallow and the pikes smaller. In addition to pikes they also caught big perches and smallish but full-grown zanders.

Zander 46 cm, catched by Softbait Spinning in early July 2015. Zander was released.

In the middle of July we started to do evening-time trolling for zander and day-time jigging on the big open waters of Lake Saimaa. The rapidly changing weather conditions have been a bit tricky this summer, but luckily true fishermen and fisherwomen aren’t made of sugar!

Pike fishing in the beginning of July 2015

Also the eagerness of the fish to bite has varied a lot. When the time and the conditions are right, you can pull in perches with every cast. When the fish are lazier to bite, catching fish becomes more challenging and requires good fishing techniques. You have to know how to use vibrating movements and other tricks to force the fish to bite.

Softbait spinning for perch 12 July 2012

When the fish are lazier to bite, it’s also more important to cast more accurately and use baits of the right size, shape and colour. Baits can be painted with marker pens to give them the desired colour and a tempting scent. A group of our customers recently learned the importance of colour. They used two identical softbaits for jigging, one was painted with marker and the other wasn’t. The result was surprising: they caught fish only with the painted one. Another group tried different colours and to their surprise the most successful colour was the one that they never could imagine working. When fish are lazy to bite, you are forced to experiment and at the same time learn a lot.

Evening time fishing 22 July 2014

Pikes, perches and zanders have been moving on more or less the same areas this summer, which means shorter boat rides to catch fish. The size of the fish is normal but catching them has required more work than last summer. And when you work hard, it’s also more important to have proper breaks and eat well during your fishing trip. The ideal way to unwind is to seat yourself around an open fire, empty your mind of fishing thoughts for a while, have a nice chat with a good meal, and after a good break like this you are refreshed, filled with energy and 100 % ready for fishing again.

Late evening fishing in July 2015

Tip from our fishing guide and company owner Mr. Jari Kayhko:

The last week of June and the first two weeks of July are good for catching zander near our fishing cottage. After mid-July zanders will start to move towards the streaming water areas in the distance of 5 - 6 km from our cottage and also to the big lakes of the Great Saimaa lake system, such as Paasselka, Orivesi, Savonselka and so on. Big pikes do the same and both zanders and pikes will be more often caught from the deeper areas or bank slopes of the big lakes of Saimaa in the daytime.

July 2014

In the beginning 0f July 2014 we welcomed a group of four fishermen from Lithuania to our cottage in Savonranta. We started with a one-day guided fishing trip during which I introduced them to the best lures and fishing spots of the area. The week was quite cold and rainy, but the guys managed to catch fish every day, by trolling as well as casting. Our guests were pleased with the pikes, perches and zanders they caught, and prepared tasty dishes out of them at our cottage. They also caught a nice fat ide.

Zander fishing 5 July 2014

In the middle of July we welcomed Gennady, Sergey and Aleksey from Moscow. The weather was brilliant and very warm almost every day. We fished together for five days, catching big pikes, zanders and perches, which we naturally cooked and ate with delight. The guys went fishing also on their own by using the two motorboats we have for our customers to use, free of charge. In addition to sunbathing and having sauna they also went for a bit of sight-seeing in Kerimäki and Savonlinna.

22.7.2014

During the last weeks in July we also headed for the bigger open waters of Lake Saimaa to cast for larger perches. The sunny spring days made them pleasantly active and hungry. I had daily guidances for over 2 week period with differrent groups enjoying of Finnish summer and great fishing with me.

Fishermen Group from Belarus on Lake Saimaa, July 2015

We spent a one-week fishing holiday at Cottage Jokiniemi in the village of Savonranta.

We planned to have a fishing week at Lake Saimaa area and saw the proposal of Old School Trolling. I wrote an email to the company owner Mr. Jari Kayhko and received a reply with a detailed description of the cottage, boats and other equipment. All very clear and quick!

Location of Fishing Cottage Jokiniemi on Lake Saimaa

We travelled 1200 km from Belarus to Finland by using route Minsk–Vilnius–Riga–Tallinn–Helsinki–Savonranta. The roads are excellent. On the way to Helsinki, we stopped for a night in Tallinn. On our way back home, two drivers did it without any stops.

When we arrived at Cottage Jokiniemi, our host Jari Kayhko was waiting for us and showed the cottage and house equipments for us. This fishing cottage is located only 30 meters from Lake Saimaa.

Fishing Cottage Jokiniemi on Lake Saimaa

It had more than everything needed for a one-week stay for fishing: a spacious living room, kitchen with everything you need, including a dishwasher, two separate bed rooms, a sauna. The house is clean, comfortable and it can accommodate six people easily.

On the shore there were two boats filled with petrol and equipped with sonars, all ready for us! There was also other gear ready for us, including excellent casting and spinning rods for trolling, lots of spinners and Softbait lures.
Very cool!

Our sturdy fishing boats in Cottage Jokiniemi are equipped with a 8 hp Mercury and 5 hp Yamaha outboard engines

Cottage Jokiniemi in July–June is a great place for catching pike, walleye and perch. We managed to catch a couple of trophy-size pikes up to 7 - 8 kg as well as perches up to 500 grammes and walleyes up to 2 kg`s.

Pike fishing on Lake Saimaa July 2015

Our host Jari showed us how to carve the fish into fillets. We cooked some of our catch and put the rest into a freezer. The cottage has a separate 100-liter freezer especially for fish, which we greatly appreciated. We brought some of the fish to cook at home .

We also enjoyed the sauna. How nice it is after a day of fishing to have a good steam, and then run out to the beach and a dip in the cool water of a northern lake.

Enjoy the atmosphere and sensitive heat of our sauna in Cottage Jokiniemi

Our host Jari helped us with everything. He bought us the necessary fishing licenses, helped us with rainwear and told us how to smoke fish. He even prepared a map for us with the target depth of the lake and the most promising fishing spots!

Fishing Guide and Company Owner Jari Käyhkö

After the week of fishing, we were tired but happy. We had a lot of fun, thanks to our host Jari for the excellent organization and warm hospitality.

Best of luck to you, Jari Käyhkö and Old School Trolling!

Fishing Trips and Cottage Accommodation on Lake Saimaa - June 2012 - 2019

Pike + 6 kg caught in the beginning of June 2019.

We welcomed a fisherman group of five persons from Latvia to our cottage on 5th of June 2019 for a 8-day fishing holiday. The beginning of their holiday was very hot and they decited to do most of their fishing early morning and late evening. In this part of the year we do have daylight for over 20 hours a day, which do make night fishing on boat safe and effective. Warm and hot air as well a wind from south to west makes fishes bite well. Cold north wind makes fishes passive.

In the beginning of June we had hot period from 3rd to 9th day. Next we had colder period from 10th to 15 th day. once again hot weather starting from 16th day over the midsummer fest.

Their fishing results were good, They had a lot of action with pikes when using softbaits, biggest one weighted 6 kg`s and was caught by jerk bait fishing method.

Evening fishing 15th June 2019.

In the end of 2 nd week of June 2019 we welcomed a fisherman group of 2 older gentelemen  from Moscow in to our fishing cottage. In the first day of their fishing holiday we had a guided fishing trip together. We caught perches and pikes by softbait spinning in deeper water area of 6 to 10 meter deep. These gentelemen were not so interrested in trolling or deep water fishing and they decited to do fishing by spinning and coarse fishing in shallow water near shorelines during their holiday.

They caught good daily numbers of pikes and roach related fishes in shallow water of less than 3 meter deep. The most memorable moment for them was a simultaneus catch of 2 pikes in our cottage pond. Finally there was 2 pikes in same landing net and third coming right after this picture below was taken. As you can see, shallow water fishing can offer plenty of action when you find correct place and time for catching.

These older gents were also great cook`s. They offered me the greatest 3 coarse meal I have ever tasted in our cottage. We did also have a long converstion of their lives and careers starting from  Soviet years to  former Russian Federation years and retirement. Thank you for sharing this part of your life experience with me.

As usual, midsummer started actual zander season in our location. Zander prefers warm water and start eating well when their spawning season is over. I was having a long week-end vacation in our cottage durig midsummer and did some trolling and soft bait spinning for zander. Evening time, from couple of hours before sunset to dark was the best for catching. Sun light warmed the water and zanders were active evening time. Water surface temperature and wind direction are also important for summer time zander fishing. Water surface temperature reached + 18 degrees and we had wind from east to west. Long term wind from North West to North East do bring cold air to our area and makes fish passive.

Average size for zander caught in our area is varying from 40 to 60 cm. Minimum landing lenght is 45 cm and recommended daily fish quota is 2 zanders / 1 fisherman / 1 day.

Guided fishing trip for catching zander in June 2012

Softbait spinning for zander in 28 June 2012. This zander was released after photo shoot.

During the last week of June 2012 I worked as a guide for two Finnish fishermen. We did softbait spinning in a semi-sunny and warm weather. Afternoon and early evening were the best times for catching zanders which we were looking for. One of our visitors caught his biggest ever zander during this event.

Zander +50 cm which our visitors prepared for a tasty meal.

Hooking and cooking on Lake Saimaa!

Fish soup for 4 - 5 persons

  • 1 liter water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 onion
  • 10 allspice (whole)
  • dill stems
  • 1/2 leek
  • 4 large potatoes
  • 4 decilitre milk
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • dill and chives
Clean and fillet the fish. Boil the bones with coarsely chopped onion and spices. Cook for about 20 minutes. Strain the liquid into another saucepan. When the liquid comes to the boil, add the leek cut into rings and the peeled, diced potatoes. Cook for about 15 minutes. Cut the fish into chunks and add to the soup. Cook for another five minutes. Mix the flour with milk and add to the soup. Let the soup simmer for a few more minutes. Sprinkle plenty of chopped dill and chives on top of the soup.

 Memorable midsummer fishing in 2014

Midsummer is the period of time centered upon the summer solstice, and more specifically the northern European celebrations that accompany the actual solstice or take place on a day between June 19 and June 25 and the preceding evening. The exact dates vary between different cultures.

Lighting bonfires and bathing in saunas are two of the most typical traditions in Midsummer celebrations. Barbecuing, fishing and boating have later become standard Midsummer pastimes while enjoying cottage life. In the olden days, Midsummer spells were cast, many of which had to do with hopes of increasing fertility and finding a future spouse. Midsummer was also a popular time for weddings.

Evening fishing 23 June 2014

An important feature of the midsummer in Finland is the white night and the midnight sun. Because of Finland's location around the Arctic Circle the nights near the midsummer day are short or non-existent. This gives a great contrast to the darkness of the winter time. The temperature can vary between 0 °C and +30 °C, with an average of about 20 °C in the South.

Catching a crocodile during Midsummer 2014

During midsummer 2014 I did spinning with soft baits and Rapala minnow spoons in shallow water areas near our cottage. The weather was beautiful and warm, perfect for recreational fishing. We caught this big pike from a water area of 2 to 2,5 meters deep. The fish hit our lure from the offshore side of the lake. Usually pikes are caught from the shoreline, where they are hiding among plants or looking for cover from stones or sunken logs. It is also a good idea to do spinning in deeper water areas that have underwater humps, pools or banks to catch bigger pikes in summertime.

Great catch for Anatoly during midsummer 2014

Catching pikes by using dead baitfish as bait in bubble and hook fishing  in 2015

We started June 2015 by angling of pikes. First we caught a small baitfish, which we used as a bait for pike angling. The end of May and beginning of June are good for catching pikes of 1 to 3 kg right along our shallow cottage shoreline. Pikes of this size contain only low levels of mercury and they are the most suitable size for cooking. Making a rig for pike angling is a simple task. Attach a swivel to a leader line of 50 – 60 cm long. Thread a big fishing float in to the line and attach one single or triple hook to the another end of the line. It is not necessary to use any line weight in this rig.

Pike, 2.9 kg caught in Cottage Jokiniemi June 2 nd 2015.

Smoked pike is a very tasty meal. For smoking we use a gas burner, which makes controlling the smoking process easy for everyone. You get a good aroma of wood as well as a juicy and moist texture to your smoked fish with this equipment.

Smoking fish in Cottage Jokiniemi.
If you have never smoked fish, here's a quick guide for smoking pike, zander and big perch:

Place the scaled and gutted fish onto a bed of coarse sea salt for a couple of hours. Sprinkle salt generously on the skin of the fish and also apply some on the inside. Place some alder wood chips or sawdust on the bottom of the fish smoker such that it is almost covered. Shake the excess salt from the fish and place them onto the grill. Close the smoker lid, light the fire and smoke on a highest flame for about 20 – 30 minutes and another 20 – 30 minutes on a lowish flame. The fish is ready when its skin is nicely golden-brown and the scales come off easily when you pull them with your fingers.

Hot and sunny summedays of June are perfect for catching big perches on Lake Saimaa. Bite can be wild when you find a flock of perches eating smaller fishes. Perch + 500 gramms caught 22 June 2015.

Bread Crumbs-Coated Fried Perch

Ingredients
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cups bread crumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon whitepepper
  •  1/4 teaspoon dried garlic
  • 1 pound / 500 grammes lake perch fillets
  • Vegetable oil
In a shallow bowl, beat eggs and milk. In another shallow bowl, combine bread crumbs, garlic, salt, and whitepepper. Dip the perch in egg mixture, then coat with crumbs. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry fish for several minutes on each side or until it flakes easily with a fork

Tip from our fishing guide and company owner Mr. Jari Kayhko:

I have been fishing for over 30 years on these waters and I have learned that the period from the beginning of June to Midsummer (which will be on June 25th in 2016) is very good for big pike fishing near our fishing cottage. This is due to the coldness of the waters and the end of spawning period, which makes big pikes hungry and ready for catching. There are also plenty of smaller pikes hunting in shallow water, which makes fishing very active with lots of biting and actual catches.

Fishing Reports of June 2016

The first week of June was exceptionally hot and summery this year, and it brought us a group of five fishermen from Latvia.

They had fantastic weather conditions to fish for pikes and perches by spinning and trolling on Lake Saimaa, as well as to go fly-fishing for brown trout on the rapids in Heinävesi.

Pikes were particularly eager to bite in the evening time, making it easy for our guests to cook delicious pike dishes at our cottage.

All aboard. Riga-Tallinn-Helsinki, plus 5 hours drive to The Fishing Cottage Jokiniemi. Everything is clear - thanks Jari for detailed instructions. Our group had an opportunity to fish local Lake Saimaa and also went for fly-fishing trout in near-by area streams. Each evening we had a gourmet fishing meals accompanied with a splash of wine (vodka, whisky, etc.). Accommodation environment positively surprised us- there was much MORE than we expected from "country cabin". Using 2 boats was smart idea- we split into 2 groups and had twice more opportunities to learn waters. It paid back. Each day there were 10-12 good size pikes cached and same amount released. Two nice pikes were lost because one broke our landing net and another broke brided cord ( we estimated size of pikes in 8-10kg each). During evening gatherings Jari was giving us valuable advice, in exchange - we share own observations and established plan for next day challenge. Even weather conditions were difficult (too hot) we managed get fish each day, enjoy calm nature and comfort of accommodation.

Second Week of June:

The second week of June was very cold and rainy this year due long term north wind. It brought us another group of fishermen from Latvia.Unfortunately they did not sent me report or pictures of their holiday catches to be published.

Third week of June:

In June 2016 we welcomed a family of four from St. Petersburg. The father, mother and their 2 daughters used our boats to catch pikes and perches in near by waters of our fishing cottage on Lake Saimaa.

Family did mainly trolling for pikes and bubble and hook angling for perches, breams and roaches. Biggest perch was caught by daughter of the family and it weighted over 500 grams.

Fishing Trips and Cottage Accommodation on Lake Saimaa - May 2015

In the beginning of May we started our open water season by soft bait spinning for pikes and perches. Because the water is still cold (less than 6 degrees Celsius), fishing can be challenging. The fish are interested in baits that imitate natural bait fish such as vendace (European cisco), perch, bream or roach. Shock colors are also working well in the beginning of season.

Softbait Spinning for pike`s on Lake Saimaa, May 2015. Pike + 3 kg`s.

Our rental cottage is located by a shallow pond (max 2,5 meters deep), which is connected with a 50-meter waterway to Lake Saimaa. This area of shallow water gets warmer earlier than the deeper areas of Lake Saimaa. Thanks to this we can catch roach-related fishes, perches and pikes from the shoreline of our cottage already from the very beginning of May. The best season for spring time angling is from mid-May to mid-June.

Sunny weather and high pressure have positive effect on fishing. In the end of May, early mornings and late evenings are very good times for catching fish.
Rudd catched fron Cottage Jokiniemi in the end of May 2015. We were also able to catch Ides up to 2 kg`s.

We also use natural baits for bubble and hook angling. First we catch small fish for bait and then we use them for angling of pikes and perches. Naturally we kill the bait fish before using them as bait. This way we can catch pikes that weigh from 1 to 5 kg and perches up to 500–600 grams.
Perch catched by softbait spinning from deeper areas of Lake Saimaa in May 2015

Cottage Jokiniemi is a very good place for fishing and it is easy to catch fish for dinner daily. This is why we release the fish we are not going to use for food. In our cottage we have all you need for smoking, frying and cooking delicious fish dinners. If you want, we can also teach you how to bone the fish you catch.
Walley catched by softbait spinning in the end of May 2015. Zander + 50 cm.
Tip from our fishing guide and company owner Mr. Jari Kayhko:

Water areas near our fishing cottage are free from ice usually around the 1st of May. The waters right in front of our cottage are only max. 2,5 metres deep. This means that the waters warm up quite fast in spring, which attracts small fish to do their eating and spawning there in May, which in its turn attracts bigger carnivorous fish to turn up and eat the small fish. The most effective methods for catching fish in the beginning of May are spinning, worm angling and fresh bait angling.
