Fishing on Lake Saimaa 2018 & Regards from Fishing Cottage Jokiniemi

June 2018

During midsummer week we have a fisherman group from Romania visiting our cottage on Lake Saimaa. This group has a great mentality for fishing. They use a selective fishing method, meaning they release the fish that are either small or big. For example in pike fishing they only aim for ones that are from 1 to 3 kilos in size and they only keep the amount of fish they need for cooking a dinner. I am very pleased to have this responsibly thinking group visiting us.

Instructions for handling and releasing fish

If possible, release the fish by using pliers while the fish is still outside the boat, near the surface of the water.

If you are planning to take a picture or measurements of the fish, lift it into a container filled with fresh water. Remove the hook using pliers while the fish is in the container of water.

Wet your hands or use wet gloves when touching the fish. Never hang the fish from its tail or head, as this can cause internal injuries or stretch the spine. Hold the fish horizontally and take the photograph quickly to minimise the time the fish is out of the water.

If you wish to weigh a fish that will be released, use a weighing bag. You can also weigh a fish while it is in a net made of rubber-coated knotless netting.

Release the fish back into the water gently. An exhausted fish may need to be resuscitated before release. Resuscitate the fish by holding it against the stream or by moving it back and forth in the water to make water flow through the gills. When the fish is ready to swim on its own, you may release it.

July 2018

Every fishermen group need a cook.

During last week of July we have a fisherman group from Israel visiting our cottage on Lake Saimaa.

All the fish hooked are not killed or eaten..... In Finland we have minimum landing lengths for different species in the Finnish fishing law. Most of our visitors also use selective fishing method, in which we release small ones as well as big ones, which are important for breeding. The best advice we can give to our visitors is to keep the fish they can use for a dinner and release the rest. During the past years we have also got more and more catch and release fishermen visiting us on Lake Saimaa. All responsibly thinking fishermen all over the world are most welcome to visit us.

August 2018

During  first 2 week of August we had a fishing family from Switzerland visiting our cottage on Lake Saimaa. In the beginning of their holiday we had a boat trip with picnic and a tutorial fishing trip together to get familiar with best fishing spots and methods for fishing on Lake Saimaa.

Picnic by campfire on Lake Saimaa, August 2018.

Our Swiss vistors caught perches and pikes during their tutorial fishing trip on Lake Saimaa in August 2018.

Simons very first pike caught on Lake Saimaa.

Couple days before end of their holiday on Lake Saimaa I got this wonderful message from our Swiss visitors.:

Hi Jari, Another great day in fishing. Here you can find a picture of Eric with his new record pike of 90cm. After taking measurement we released the beauty. Regards, Max and Eric

In the end part of August we had visitors from St. Petersburg. Vitaly did great catching in pike fishing during their family vacation.

September 2018

First half of September was the best for catching big ones in nearby waters of our cottage this year. After extremely hot summer air and water temperature get colder and we had great catches both for our cottage vistors and clients taking part to my guided fishig trips. I do proudly present fishing heroes of our cottage vistors of September 2018.

Our Russian visitors caught nice zanders and pikes during their fishing holiday on Lake Saimaa in the beginnig of September 2018.

Great zander caught on Lake Saimaa in September 2018. This family from Moscow caught the biggest zander of the 2018.

Our Lithuanian visitors caught nice zanders and pikes on Lake Saimaa while staying in our cosy fishing cottage Jokiniemi in September 2018.

Great zander for our Lithuanian visitors in September 2018.

Biggest pike of season 2018 caught by our vistors from Lithuania.

Our Belarusian vistors did good fishing with pikes and zanders after mid-September.

Good catch for our Belarusian visitor in September 2018. Zander +60 cm.

Another perspective on the size of fish caught in Finland!

Many of our visitors compare their fishing results those they have
reached in their home countries or during their visits to other
countries. They also compare their record fish to the fish caught by
me or by clients that have been using my guidance services, or by
visitors who do all fishing all by themselves in our fishing cottage.

I have been fishing in our area of Lake Saimaa all my life, far over
30 years now, and still I have to face difficult days during which a 1
to 3 kilo pike is a real victory for me. There are days during which I
hunt big ones and only them....just to return home without a picture
of the trophy chased. Luckily there are much more great fishing days,
both for me and for the clients I offer guided fishing trips and for
visitors of our fishing cottage who do all fishing by themselves. It
is obvious for all of us that we can’t only catch record-size fish,
but because the chance to catch The Big One always remains, that’s
what makes fishermen travel far from their homes as well as challenge
themselves on unknown water areas.

I will offer you another perspective on the size of fish caught in
Finnish lakes by spinning and trolling, by showing you the
measurements of the biggest fish caught in a very popular Finnish
fishing cup. The cup consists of catch-and-release fishing events in
which competitors are after pikes, perches and zanders only. The fish
are released back into the water alive after taking a photo of the
length of the fish and another photo in which the fisherman poses with
the fish he caught. The competitors are trying to catch 3 perches, 2
zanders and 1 pike as big as possible. The lengths of these 6
individual fish are added together and the team with the biggest total
sum of lengths wins. This competition cup runs from May to October
every year and it gives us statistics on the size of fish caught by
experienced competing fishermen here in Finland.

I will show you a table including the 5 biggest pikes, perches and
zanders caught in these competitions. Remember that these fish are not
the result of one team, they are the 5 biggest ones caught by appr.
120 to 150 fishermen during an 8-hour competition day.
